New Forest runners help minibus serviceThis page was uploaded on: Thursday, 10-Nov-2011 12:21:29 GMT |
Every year the New Forest Runners organise the New Forest 10, a running race which attracts runners from across the UK and Europe and sometimes even further afield.
The race is held in the Forest around New Park in glorious scenery on forest tracks, and is very popular with up to 1,000 runners taking part.
The New Forest Runners hire one of Community First New Forest's minibuses to take volunteer marshals around the course during the race.
It is through this association that the club became aware of Community First New Forest's Call and Go service.
Graham Hartless, Transport Manager at Community First New Forest, is delighted to announce that thanks to the New Forest Runners' generous donation of £400, Call and Go passengers will be able to enjoy some extra trips in addition to their normal shopping journeys.
Graham explains, "During the festive season we are offering an afternoon trip to the pantomime, using volunteer drivers to take passengers to and fro." He adds, "When the weather improves, a cream tea or two may be possible."
Call and Go operates across the New Forest and Waterside areas, and is designed to help anyone who is unable to access a public bus service, either through their frailty, or if they live too far from a bus route.
The charity operates a small fleet of wheelchair accessible minibuses, with MiDAS trained drivers, who collect people from their door, take them to a nearby supermarket and return them home again afterwards.
If passengers need to they can even take an escort with them. Fares are similar to regular bus journeys. Travel tokens can be used but unfortunately Call and Go cannot accept bus passes.
