Home Support Service is now 24/7! |
Community First New Forest’s Home Support Service, which has been running for 14 years, has been extended to provide care around the clock.
The Home Support Service was set up by Community First New Forest to enable older people to remain safely in their own homes.
The organisation provides personal care as well as companionship – a sitting service – to those living alone or who need someone with them while their usual carer goes out.
Gael Clemett, Manager of the Home Support Service at Community First New Forest, explains why the new service was needed.
“We were getting more and more requests to look after clients overnight; either when a client’s family was going on holiday or more often in the case of sudden illness.”
Gael describes how the service works, “Instead of the upheaval of their mother, father or partner going into a care home for respite we move in. In the case of our existing clients we are familiar to them, know their family and understand their individual requirements.”
Gael adds, “This can literally be a life saver.”
An additional six members of trained and experienced staff have been recruited recently, bringing the total number of carers at Community First New Forest to nearly 100.
The organisation can now provide short to medium term overnight care or occasional one off nights in an emergency, following hospital discharge or a family member’s sudden illness.
Speaking about the overnight service, Gael says, “It has been really well received, I think probably as it avoids unnecessary disruption and distress and as a client recently put it, ‘You can’t beat your own bed’. How true!”
