Feel Good Factor for Older Persons

This page was uploaded on: Wednesday, August 3, 2011

Barfields Sheltered Housing in LymingtonWellbeing activities and services are being set up in Barfields Sheltered Housing in Lymington.

The programme has been developed by ‘Friends at Barfields’ for both residents and non residents of the scheme.

The services and activities are aimed at improving the lives of older persons by reducing isolation, increasing mobility and sense of wellbeing whilst helping people to maintain their independence.

All services and activities are carried out in a warm, friendly atmosphere and so far include exercise classes, a nail clipping service (for both hands and feet) and a bathing service.

The nail cutting service costs £10 for both hands and feet and £3 for fingernails only and the bathing service costs £6.75 per half hour session.

Extend exercise classes are held on a Monday from 10.30am to 11.30am at a cost of £2.50 per session with a minimum of 10 or £3 if less than 10 participants.

Extend is mainly seated exercise to music (sing along if you want) and is designed to improve strength, co-ordination and balance.

On Wednesday from 10am to 11am at a cost of £2.50 is Later Life Postural Stability which is specifically tailored towards safe, fun exercise aimed at improving strength and balance.

These are ‘evidence based’ exercises aimed at improving the older person’s ability to undertake their normal daily routines more easily, for example shopping, and at improving their balance and steadiness when walking and their general health and wellbeing.

The Later Life classes are run by ‘GetFit121’ and are part of a wider initiative developed with Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust and New Forest District Council.

The classes are funded by New Forest District Council.

The class is particularly good for people who have fallen in the past or those who feel unsteady.

The programme is continuing to be developed and the aim is to set up nutrition, healthy eating and diet management classes, together with a range of alternative therapies for relaxation and health.

To get out and about in beautiful surroundings healthy walks is also in the process of being established.

Elaine Fisher, Community First New Forest Development Worker, says, “It is a wonderful opportunity for both residents and non residents to get to know each other.”

A non resident who has been attending since Barfields opened its doors to the wellbeing services said, “Coming here has been the highlight of our week. We now have something to look forward to”.
