Despite the rather damp and dismal weather, there was an altogether sunnier atmosphere at Hythe and Dibden Parish Hall [on Sunday 5 June 2011] where over 100 older people had been invited to come and enjoy a free community lunch organised as part of the nationwide Big Lunch event.
The aim of this large social gathering was to bring together young and old, encouraging new friendships and for everyone to have an enjoyable time.
Jacqui Missen, Innovations Development Worker at Community First New Forest, says "Many of the older people in the area are especially lonely at weekends.
There are lots of activities during the week and they may have the chance to go to all sorts of different clubs and associations but weekends don't offer the same opportunities, therefore something like the big lunch is an ideal event to bring people together".
Supported by Community First New Forest, Age Concern New Forest East, The Handy Trust and St John's Church, a fantastic lunch was served with style by younger members of the Handy Trust. The menu included cold meat, new potatoes and salad, followed by ice cream provided by Kerry and the Ice Cream Bike and tea and fabulous homemade cakes, many of which were donated by family and friends of the organisers. Entertainment was provided by St John's youth group and proved to be very enjoyable for all concerned.
Sponsorship and generous donations were received from numerous local businesses including Community First New Forest, One Bite Communications, Drivers Dry Berthing, Hythe & Dibden Parish Council, Laserworks and Tesco. Proceeds from the raffle went to Age Concern New Forest East.
