Advice for Moped Riding in Winter

Riding a moped in winter presents additional challenges, not only do you have to consider other vehicles on the road but also some frequently adverse weather.

  • If you can avoid riding in bad weather conditions, do so: make alternative arrangements for your journey or don’t ride.
  • Avoid grids, leaves and manhole covers etc as they can all be slippery and dangerous. Take extra care on bends in wet conditions.
  • Keep warm and dry!
  • Dress to fully protect yourself from wind, cold and rain.
  • Always wear hi-visibility and other protective clothing: Helmet, Gloves, Sturdy Footwear, Heavy Jacket, Waterproofs and Thick Trousers.
  • Turn on your lights.
  • Check your brakes, lights and indicators, tyres, steering, oil and fuel on a daily basis. Avoid riding when you are tired since fatigue can affect your riding skill. Take a break if getting cold, wet or tired – “stop, revive, survive”
