Moped loan scheme helps Kirsty to get a career

Kirsty with her Wheels to Work MopedCommunity First New Forest's 'Wheels to Work' project is reporting another success story.  The Wheels to Work moped load scheme is designed for young people (aged 16 to 25) who don't have access to public or private transport to get them to a job, vocational training or attend interviews.

Kirsty, 23, from New Milton had just come to the end of a seasonal job and was concerned about finding another, when she was offered a position with a recreation and community centre in Fawley, some 17 miles away across the New Forest.

The job offer was conditional on her having access to her own transport, as shifts were involved and her prospective employer had been let down in the past by others unable to access the work independently.

Even if this had not been a condition, the journey by public transport would have been difficult – there was a train available to nearby Brockenhurst, but infrequent buses for the remainder of the journey; not always running early or late enough for the shifts involved.

Kirsty applied to Community First New Forest when she heard about Wheels to Work.  Having met the conditions of the scheme, Kirsty was provided with a moped, fully taxed and insured, with breakdown and service cover, together with a helmet, gloves and a high visibility vest.  She was also given free CBT (Compulsory Basic Training), a legal requirement for riding a moped.

Thanks to Wheels to Work, Kirsty was able to accept the job offer and now, with the help of her employers, she is a fully qualified Community Sports Coach.

Kirsty is keen to tell other young people about the Wheels to Work scheme, "It was good for me.  It helped me get to my job which meant I could gain more qualifications and I will now be in a much better position to progress my career."
