Could you be a Volunteer Bank Minibus Driver?

This page was uploaded on: Monday, May 30, 2011

Do you have some spare time especially in the summer holiday period to lend a hand taking children to activities in the New Milton area?

The Volunteer Centre at Community First New Forest, working in partnership with the Arnewood Pyramid of Schools, is aiming to swell the numbers of volunteers who can drive minibuses in the community.

Community First New Forest is looking to MiDAS train drivers to be part of a bank of volunteers who can help out occasionally assisting children to get to and from events.

Hazel Dyson, Volunteer Centre Co-ordinator explains, "Living in a rural area or not having a family car puts children at a huge disadvantage".

The Arnewood school in New Milton and its feeder primaries in New Milton, Ashley, Hordle and Tiptoe are working together to ensure all their pupils have easier access to out-of-school activities.

Donna Lenton, Extended Schools Co-ordinator for the cluster explains "Working with Community First, we hope to develop a bank of minibus drivers available to schools and ensure no child will be excluded from taking part in afterschool or holiday activities because they don't have access to transport".

As well as being a great way to get involved in the community, volunteering has also been shown to give a number of other benefits.

These include meeting new people, developing an interest in new things, learning new skills and increasing knowledge. Volunteering can help people to develop their CV and in some cases can even lead to paid employment.

Hazel is hoping to increase the number of trained volunteers for this role. She says, "We want anyone who is interested in training to be a minibus driver to get in touch.

You would be part of a bank of volunteers, so the role can be fitted around other commitments you may have providing a flexible and worthwhile opportunity to help your local community." Hazel adds, "There's nothing to lose but if you're looking for a challenging, rewarding and fulfilling experience then volunteering may well be for you".
