Grandparent Carers Day

Grandparents from across the New Forest are being invited to an event run by local charity Community First New Forest. The free event is especially for those grandparents who care for their grandchildren full-time. 

Community First New Forest’s Grandparent Carers Day is taking place on Tuesday 31 January 2012 at Lyndhurst Community Centre.   

The charity has been running a support group for Grandparent Carers for over two years.  The group assists the growing number of grandparents in a full-time caring role. Community First New Forest is hoping to meet and help as many grandparent carers as possible on the 31st, especially those new to the role.  

Grandparents can be thrown into a caring role unexpectedly, often as a result of a tragedy. Common reasons include an accident, a death or drug and alcohol addiction. 

According to the Group’s Facilitator, Carol Malky,

“Just at the time of life when they want to relax and enjoy themselves many grandparents have to put their lives on hold indefinitely.  As much as they love their grandchildren, this can be a real challenge”.

Several organisations will be attending the Grandparent Carers Day to answer questions and give support with emotional, social and practical issues such as finance, education, benefits and legal matters.  

Organisations represented include It’s your Choice, Digital Switchover and New Forest Carers Forum.

Carol believes that this type of event and the regular support group meetings help to spread the message that support and advice is out there.  She says,

“We have been able to help many grandparents cope better with the situation they are in. Knowledge is power and of great importance and putting these people in touch with others who find themselves in a similar situation really helps”.

 

Free refreshments, including a buffet lunch, will be available at the Grandparent Carers Day at Lyndhurst Community Centre.
