Autistic Spectrum Disorder Information day |
An event, run especially for parents /carers in the New Forest who look after children on the autistic spectrum is being organised by Community First New Forest. The Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Information Day is taking place on Wednesday 15 May, from 10am- 1.30pm at Lyndhurst Community Centre. Tea and coffee will be served on arrival and lunch will be provided during the session. It is open to parents/carers/professionals from across the New Forest.
Over the last 3 years, the charity has been running a support group for over 120 parents. Community First New Forest is hoping to meet and help as many parents /carers as possible on the day, especially those with newly diagnosed children.
According to the Group’s Facilitator, Carol Malky, “Parents often feel really isolated and are desperate to talk to others who will understand their situation. It’s hard when you realise that your child is different; no-one really understands except for parents who also deal with daily issues, like extreme tantrums, sleeping problems, meltdowns, food, behavioural issues. Especially when your child has just been diagnosed, you need time to take in that news and with support it’s easier to cope.”
A number of guest speakers will be available to answer questions. Speakers include Autism Wessex, Ringwood School, an occupational therapist and Allison Hope West who will give a presentation on Sensory Processing and on the new children’s and families bill. She has experience of working with a range of schools from maintained to specialist residential independent provisio, she also delivers training and support on many aspects of autism, with the Local Authority. Representatives from a range of other organisations including SCARF and Parent Voice will also be attending.
Carol believes that this type of event and the regular support group meetings help to spread the message that support and advice is out there. She says, “We have been able to help many parents cope better with the situation they are in. Often we’re the first point of call for new parents Knowledge is power and of great importance and putting these people in touch with others who find themselves in a similar situation really helps”. Free refreshments, including sandwiches, will be available on the day.
If you would like to book a place contact Carol Malky at Community First New Forest on 01425 482773 or email [email protected] Alternatively, if you are unable to attend but would like to be added on to the ASD mailing list then Community First New Forest would also like to hear from you. |
